The chief financial officer of the KwaZulu-Natal's Health Department has failed in his bid to prevent the head of the department from dismissing him. News24 reports that Enos Ravhura's application to prevent his dismissal by Dr Sibongile Zungu, the head of the department, was dismissed by Judge Hamilton Cele, handed down late last week.
Ravhura was suspended on full pay along with supply chain manager Andile Zondo on 26 November 2013. The report says what Ravhura's offence was has not been revealed by the department, nor the outcome of its disciplinary inquiry. However, according to the judgment Ravhura was found guilty of a number of charges by an internal disciplinary hearing on 26 September 2014.
Ravhura had been in his post for little more than a year at the time of his suspension. At a recent media conference called by the National Education Health and Allied Workers Union in December, the union revealed that Ravhura had been found guilty by the inquiry and the recommended sanction had been to issue him with a final warning. However, Zungu opted to dismiss Ravhura, and it is this dismissal that Ravhura challenged unsuccessfully in the Labour Court.
Two weeks ago it was confirmed that Zungu was herself being investigated following allegations of mismanagement and corruption.
