A “trusted” nurse accused of the rape and sexual assault of two teenagers will appear in the Nigel Magistrate’s Court tomorrow after his bail hearing was adjourned on Tuesday due to an unpaid electricity bill.
Magistrate Rakesh Chitradow apologised to the accused – from Ekurhuleni – officials, and the public gallery, saying the Public Works Department had not paid its electricity bill.
“The generator … can't run until 2pm – and can only operate for four hours. This matter is adjourned,” he said.
In the courtroom were the families of the two victims, both now 18, who had allegedly been abused since 2023.
The grandmother of one told News24 that the 49-year-old nurse had been “trusted”.
"He met my grandson after he’d had an operation in 2023 at a private clinic in Springs, and visited regularly at home. He would take him out for lunch and buy him gifts,” she said.
The nurse also befriended her grandson’s best friend, she added.
However, last year she became suspicious of the relationship between the nurse and her grandson, and asked why he didn’t spend his days off with his family instead of with the youngster.
“The nurse said he was offering my grandson counselling and helping him quit drugs. He behaved like a trusted social worker.
“Last year, he bought him a cellphone, claiming he wanted direct communication with him,” she added.
When a group of runners allegedly caught the nurse with her grandson, the youngster then confessed to his grandmother that he’d been having sexual encounters with the nurse since 2023, along with bribes of money and gifts.
The sister of the second victim said police visited their home last week.
“My brother confessed that the nurse had performed sexual acts on him, and after interrogation, said the nurse had been abusing him since 2023, offering money whenever he took him to a veld where the abuse occurred.”
