Nursing and midwifery scopes of practice proposals out for comment

Comment is sought within one month on draft regulations developed with the aim of determining nursing and midwifery scopes of practice and, in some cases, limiting the level of responsibility a practitioner may be expected to shoulder – depending on the category of nursing professional concerned.

Gazetted on Friday, they replace draft regulations released in May and later withdrawn, reports Pam Saxby for Legalbrief Policy Watch.

Distinguishing between professional, general and auxiliary nurses – and noting a proposal that the scope of practice of a professional nurse should include midwifery – the proposed new regulations allocate duties and responsibilities not only for nursing care but also in respect of management, supervision and related planning. Once in force, they will repeal certain regulations in place since 1984.
