OECD: How artificial intelligence could change the future of health

Artificial intelligence (AI) has played a key role in virtually every aspect of the COVID-19 response – from understanding the virus and accelerating research on potential treatments, to monitoring the recovery and improving early warning tools. The crisis has underscored the potential of AI to transform the health sector, and well-being more broadly, though the technology also risks exacerbating existing inequalities and biases.

Ensuring the trustworthy development and deployment of AI will therefore be key to realising its promise and mitigating unintended consequences.

A recent OECD report prepared for the G20 Digital Economy Task Force explores these issues further, highlighting the key policy questions that policy makers will need to address in an uncertain landscape. These questions will become ever more important as AI continues to advance, and will inform governments’ ongoing work to operationalise the G20 AI Principles, which draw on the OECD AI Principles.

In a new article on the OECD.AI Wonk Blog, we highlight the importance of data quality when applying AI to healthcare. “In the real world, health data are not always available or easily shared,” the article reads. “This hinders the development of AI models that accurately represent diverse populations with potentially very complex conditions. Having appropriate data is critical because decisions based on models with skewed or incomplete data can put patients at risk.”
