PE specialist faces eight sexual misconduct complaints

Eight former patients of a Port Elizabeth medical specialist have laid criminal complaints against him – six of sexual assault and two of rape. The Herald reports this emerged the same day a Health Professions Council of SA’s (HPCSA) formal inquiry into the allegations levelled at endocrinologist Dr Gregory Hough was meant to start.

The hearing, however, failed to begin as an HPCSA council member was not available to sit in on the hearing. It will now begin today, when at least four former patients who were allegedly sexually assaulted by Hough are expected to begin their testimony. Hough, who was based at Netcare Greenacres Hospital, was suspended from practising by the HPCSA in September after it was alleged that he had touched his female patients in an inappropriate manner.

The chair of the committee dealing with the formal inquiry into the matter, Advocate Justice Mogotsi, said it was unfortunate that the hearing could not continue as there were only four council members present instead of the required five.

Medical council Advocate Thabang Baloyi confirmed that the inquiry would continue today with the requisite number of council members sitting in.
