SA Law Reform Commission: Medical community comment invited on disability rights

Stakeholders now have until 30 June to comment on a South African Law Reform Commission (SALRC) issue paper intended to stimulate debate on the process of domesticating the 2006 UN convention on the rights of people living with disabilities, writes Legalbrief's Pam Saxby.

According to a media statement announcing the extension, the paper’s purpose includes eliciting proposals for reform, which will ‘serve as a basis for further deliberation by the SALRC’. Released in March, among other things the document explores medical and societal schools of thought on the concept of equality .

Other issues covered include ‘persuasive guidelines’ on ‘the creation of legally binding norms’ for protecting people with disabilities in states party to the convention; and the domestication process itself.
