Surgicom Private Practice Weekend 2022 invitation

The 3rd Surgicom Private Practice Weekend 2022, Private Surgical Practice in the new Reality for General Surgeons, will take place on 4/5 June 2022 at the Blaauwberg Beach Hotel, Big Bay, Cape Town.

Numbers are limited so register now to avoid disappointment.

The two-day programme covers various topics, including an interesting discussion of a real life medico-legal case, with plaintiff, defendant attorneys and expert witnesses.

Guest speakers will include Dr Nicholas Crisp, acting director general of health, talking about how private practices will integrate with the proposed NHI; Mr Darren Sweidan, head of health: Discovery, on current and future models for ARMs and global fees in SA; Dr Bettina Taylor (senior risk specialist: EthiQal) on medico-legal risk philosophy 2022, as well as a robust debate entitled: Surgeons should be directly employed by private hospitals, among other topics.

Other sessions will include including avoiding and managing tax audits while maximising tax benefits; future-proof your surgical practice, and new technologies in healthcare and potential restraints.

The weekend is free to Surgicom members but non-members are also welcome.

Coding session

There are two areas of concern related to coding: new procedures that do not have a specific code; and procedures where the correct coding systems does not adequately address the magnitude of the procedure.

There have been some queries from members related to inadequate coding, and these examples will be presented at this session. However, members are invited to submit some examples taken from their practice. Please submit by 30 April 2022 to surgicom@healthman.co.za

Examples should be formatted as follows: a) clinical information and details of surgery performed; b) What you feel is the appropriate coding.

Coding experts from major funders and HealthMan as well as representatives from the Coding Committee of Surgicom will be present at the session.
