In another challenge to existing frustrations like load shedding, overcrowding and staff shortages, services at Johannesburg’s Helen Joseph Hospital’s emergency department, theatre, intensive care unit and wards on floors four to seven have been affected by water supply issues.
Gauteng Department of Health spokesperson Motalatale Modiba said the hospital is continuing with urgent services, especially surgery, to minimise the impact on critical services.
The water supply problem is “due to challenges experienced by Johannesburg Water over the weekend”, added Modiba.
TimesLIVE reports that water tanks have been supplied to pump water into the system, and in the interim, mobile toilets have also been installed for patients and staff.
“The hospital borehole is supplying water to some areas, including the kitchen, so cooking for patients have not been affected,” Modiba said.
