Healthcare employees gathered outside the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in Cape Town on Tuesday to protest against what they called “systematic and unprecedented attacks” on their Palestinian counterparts in Gaza.
The picket was organised by the newly-formed Healthcare Workers for Palestine South Africa (HCW4PSA), as a response to Israeli Defence Force (IDF) assault that has led to the collapse of the healthcare system in Gaza.
Since the 7 October attack by Hamas on Israeli towns and villages, around 5 500 children have been killed and another 9 000 injured in Gaza.
The WHO said lack of clean water, fuel, medicines, food and other essential aid over the past six weeks has caused Al-Shifa, the once largest, most advanced and best-equipped referral hospital in Gaza, to “essentially stop functioning”, reports IOL.
