The slippery slope of instant gratification

In a time of quick-fix solutions for instant gratification in the field of specialist dentistry, prosthodontist Dr Avi Jagathpal is a voice of caution. In the latest episode of Why Did I Become A Doctor, in partnership with MedicalBrief, Jagathpal – the first guest to have a second sitting on the show – talks about practising in a time of shifting mindsets when new (and often untested) solutions come head to head with the science. He warns about the slippery slope of dentists offering solutions in a day, full mouth rehabilitation without taking into consideration the overall impacts, in-house milling machines quietly reshaping how some dentists treatment-plan, healthy tooth structure ground away in the name of an instant result, and the one-way road that starts once it's gone. Running through all of it is a question about restraint: when to treat, when to wait and when to hand a patient to someone else entirely. Jagathpal's answer: send them to the best person for the job, even if that isn't you. Listen to Jagathpal's interview here and watch this space for more inspirational stories of healthcare professionals.
