Changing diet behind SA’s rising cardiovascular disease rate

More South Africans are dying from heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases than before. [s]Health-e[/s] reports that the World Heart Foundation’s recently released Global Cardiovascular Disease Atlas shows South Africans’ changing diet, which includes more fat, sugar and salt as well as less fruits and vegetables, is behind rising cardiovascular disease rates. Obesity is also a problem in SA, says the South African Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Jessica Bacon. The report noted that other sub-Saharan African countries are seeing similar rises in cardiovascular disease, in particular strokes.
