Draft nursing regulations released for comment

Draft regulations on the scope of nursing and midwifery practice have been gazetted for comment within one month. Possibly developed in anticipation of standardising the minimum requirements to be met by nurses and midwives working for the healthcare institutions responsible for operationalising South Africa’s envisaged national health insurance system, the draft regulations nevertheless have significant implications for managing health risks and challenges associated with the COVID-19 epidemic, reports Pam Saxby for Legalbrief Policy Watch.

Against that backdrop, among other things the proposed new regulations cover the requirements to be met before registering as a professional nurse, staff nurse, auxiliary nurse or midwife. In addition, under each category of nursing practitioner the proposed new regulations set out the scope of responsibilities and skills entailed – also listing any tasks not to be performed. Once in force, they will repeal Chapters 1, 2 and 3 of the 1984 regulations (as amended in 1987, 1990 and 1991).
