Free State doctor abducted, shot and killed

Free State police are investigating a case of house robbery and murder after a doctor was abducted in front of his family on Monday and later found dead with gunshot wounds and his hands tied behind his back.

Two men attacked Dr Simon Ngcobo in his home in the early evening, robbing him of cellphones and cash at gunpoint. Police spokesperson Captain Stephen Thakeng said Ngcobo’s wife had gone shopping with her two daughters, aged two and five, at about 7.30pm.

TimesLIVE reports that on their return to their home in Doorn, Welkom, while parking the vehicle inside the garage, the wife heard her five-year-old daughter screaming for help. She saw two strange men, both armed, one pointing a gun at her child.

“They were forced into the house and as her husband opened the door, the two men forced themselves inside,” said Thakeng. Ngcobo tried to fight back but was overpowered.

The men demanded cash and an undisclosed amount of money was taken from the safe, as were the family cellphones. “The doctor was then forced to drive off with the men in his Renault Duster,” Thakeng said.

After an extensive search and with the help of Tracker, the vehicle was found abandoned in Riebeeckstad. Ngcobo’s body was found not far from the vehicle with his hands tied behind his back. He had been shot in the head and chest.
