Gauteng Health MEC Bandile Masuku is hoping the deployment of new CEOs to take charge of various state hospitals will help improve services as well as the facilities' images. According to an Eyewitness News report, Masuku is confident the appointment of the 11 new CEOs would boost staff morale and improve governance. Gauteng Health will also set up a hospital CEO’s forum in a bid to encourage streamlined communication and benchmarking.
The report says public health facilities have not enjoyed the best reputation for years – complaints of negligence, staff shortages, lack of much-needed equipment and medication and morale are a common theme.
Masuku is hoping to change this: “…And the CEO’s forum will also have all the other CEOs with benchmarking, good practices will be shared amongst themselves and we are hoping that this team will be in place for longer and we also hope to engage family with our labour peace process.”
IoL reports that the new CEOs are: Avhapfani Musie takes the reins at Odi District Hospital in Mabopane, Pretoria. The Cullinan Care and Rehab Centre is now under Thizwilondi Ananias Magadze. Phumzile Edisia Nkumane takes charge of the Bronkhorstspruit Hospital.
Sonwabo Lindani takes over at the Carletonville Hospital on Gauteng's West Rand. And Dr Jatin Champaklal Ganda takes charge at the Edenvale Hospital. Dr Ashley Mthunzi is the incoming CEO of the Pholosong Hospital in Brakpan.
The Far East Rand Hospital will now be managed by Dr Zachariah Sipho Mathaba and Makibi Affectionate Madolo has been appointed CEO of the Sebokeng Hospital.
Dr Naing Soe takes charge of the problematic Mamelodi Hospital with the Tambo Memorial Hospital now be under the care Zenzo Kwezi Oscar Ndabula.
The report says for Gauteng's specialised hospitals, Masuku announced that Mokete Abram Motaung is the new CEO at the Weskoppies Hospital in Pretoria. Masuku also announced that "no suitable candidates" were found for the Bertha Gxowa Hospital, Jubilee Hospital and the Heidelberg Hospital, even after re-advertisement of posts.
One of the newly appointed CEO’s Madolo, at Sebokeng Hospital has, meanwhile, vowed to reduce the high number of patients who die due to medical negligence by sending the hospitals’ specialists to work with local clinics to combat complications which could be avoided before patients reach the hospital, according to a report in The Sunday Independent.
Last month, Masuku revealed that Sebokeng Hospital was among the Gauteng public hospitals with a high number of patient deaths last year. Sebokeng Hospital had 511 SAE-related deaths.
Madolo said the high number of deaths was concerning, especially when some of them could have been avoided, and that no patients should be dying in hospital from “adverse perspectives”.
