Medical recruits are now able to register online for 2023 internships and community service after the Department of Health (DOH) opened its new digital system on Tuesday, which closes at midnight on 25 September.
The system was developed to help manage the internship and community service programme (ICSP), and specially designed for health professionals requiring placement at a health facility to complete an internship or community service, after their undergraduate studies. It also aims to prepare health professionals for independent practice, and provide the South African health system with resources for health in communities and facilities that need it the most, reports IT Web.
“The verification process will run concurrently with the application process,” said the DOH, adding that the system would be tested to ensure it was efficient, with minimal disruptions.
The application process is aimed at eligible applicants who meet the minimum requirements in line with the public service and the professional council prescripts. More posts have been allocated to rural and underserved areas in line with the philosophy of National Health Insurance, added the department.
Priority will be given to qualifying South African citizens, followed by permanent residents and then foreign nationals.
Students who studied abroad have to first meet the requirements of professional councils, like the Health Professions Council of South Africa, South African Nursing Council and South African Pharmacy Council.
