‘Lab grown’ organs

US scientists have completed the first successful implants of ‘lab-grown’ v aginal organs, in four women with a rare condition who were born without a v agina. The procedures, carried out between 2005 and 2008, have proved a long-term success, with all patients able to become sexually active without any discomfort. And scientists at the University of Basel have reported the first ever successful nose reconstruction surgery using cartilage grown in the laboratory. Cartilage cells were extracted from the patient's nasal septum, multiplied and expanded onto a collagen membrane. The engineered cartilage was then shaped according to the defect and implanted.
