Minister of Health Dr Joe Phaahla and Pfizer have been served with a summons from a man alleging he became paralysed after a Covid-19 vaccination.
Beeld reports that Mbombela resident Desmond Milligan, 41, is claiming more than R31m for future loss of income and general damages. Milligan said he received a Pfizer shot on 20 July 2021 and his life changed “‘irrevocably” 24 hours thereafter.
The health conditions cited in the summons include paralysis, thrombosis, chronic kidney infections, and pulmonary embolism. Milligan said he now suffers from headache, chest pain, convulsions and lower back pain on a daily basis.
Although the government set up a compensation fund for possible Covid-19 vaccine effects, compensation is capped at R262 500, his attorney, Riona Calitz, said.
Milligan therefore claims negligence on the part of the Department of Health and Pfizer for not sharing sufficient information about side-effects of the vaccine. Health Department spokesperson Foster Mohale said the action will be defended, while Pfizer reportedly did not respond to queries.
