Why Did I Become A Doctor?
Dr Reggie Reddy, a dentist with over 35 years in practice, has worked extensively across community dentistry, oral medicine and orthodontics, with a particular focus on holistic dental medicine. With an impressive patient base of 25 000 in Springs, one of the largest in the area, Reddy is well-known in his field. But not many know that the path to his successful career was intertwined with the fight against apartheid. As a student at the then-University of Durban-Westville, Reddy joined the underground ANC movement to mobilise students, together with the likes of former Mandela Government Minister Jay Naidoo. But as pressure from the apartheid government increased, he was smuggled out of the country via Swaziland, Mozambique and Tanzania, dodging bullets and hidden among cows, before ending up in London. There it was decided by the ANC leadership that he should study dentistry in India, courtesy of Unesco. Listen to Reddy’s fascinating story of resilience in the latest episode of Why Did I Become a Doctor, in partnership with MedicalBrief, which airs on Sunday, 10 May.
