UCT investigates claims of racism at Groote Schuur Hospital

The University of Cape Town (UCT) is investigations allegations of racism involving spinal surgeon Professor Robert Dunn in the orthopaedic department at Groote Schuur Hospital.

According to a Sunday Independent report, this is regarding an email in which he referred to postgraduate students in the plastic surgery department as the “clinic bitch”. Some members complained to the university which is investigating the use of sexist language.

The report says Dunn, head of orthopaedic surgery at UCT and Groote Schuur, Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, allegedly said there was no harm meant.

The report says it is not the only derogatory email doing the rounds – a staff member has claimed that the same medic allegedly referred to post-graduate students in the plastic surgery department as “black bitches”, which was subsequently recalled but not before staff members took a screen shot of it. Dunn denied knowledge of the “black bitches” email.
