Ex-wife of murdered Eastern Cape GP in court for his murder

The ex-wife of a respected Nelson Mandela Bay GP, Dr Bantu Noqekwa, was arrested and appeared in a Gqeberha court last week charged with his murder.

The mother of his three children was traced to her son’s flat in Cape Town, while another three people suspected of being involved in the fatal shooting of the doctor at his surgery have also been arrested.

One is apparently turning state witness, reports TimesLIVE.

Nothukela Ethel Noqekwa was slapped with a string of charges, including murder and conspiracy to commit murder, after she was arrested almost 800km away from the scene of the crime.

Her case was postponed to 15 June for a formal bail application.

The murder took place on the evening of 3 May at Noqekwa’s medical practice, when four men barged in and strapped him to the bed, before shooting him multiple times at point-blank range. The 56-year-old GP died at the scene.

The gunmen fled after removing the CCTV cameras to cover their tracks.

The alleged accomplices are expected to appear in the same court on Friday, with deputy provincial commissioner for crime detection Major-General Zithulele Dladla saying they also faced charges of murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

The GP and his former wife were divorced in 2012.
