The DA is calling on the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) to revoke the licence of Dr Nandipha Magudumana in light of the revelations about and charges against her relating to the saga of rapist/murderer Thabo Bester.
Magudumana's licence was suspended in April 2021 because she failed to pay her annual fees.
“The DA is calling for the HPCSA to investigate the suitability of her licence …to demonstrate no one is above the law and to ensure the safety and well being of patients who may come into contact with her in the future,” said DA MP Michele Clarke.
The party said it would write to Health Minister Dr Joe Phaahla to address the issue, reports TimesLIVE.
Magudumana and Bester appeared virtually before the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, where the matter was postponed until 20 June, according to an IOL report.
The latest official to be arrested is Mutenyane Masukela who allegedly opened the gates for Bester.
The accused, including Magudumana, face multiple charges of fraud and corruption, as well as those relating to violating a corpse, harbouring and concealing an escaped offender and defeating the ends of justice.
Magudumana was the only accused who had provisionally abandoned her bail application last week, citing new evidence.
Magudumana and Bester, together with a Mozambican national, were arrested in Arusha, Tanzania earlier last month, after they fled the country when Bester’s prison escape came to light.
Bester escaped from jail in May 2022, after faking his death with the help of his friends from G4S, who brought a corpse to his private cell and burnt it.
The 30-year-old Katlego Bereng’s body was set alight in Bester’s prison cell to fake the Facebook rapist’s death.
