A bereaved husband has described how a medical team at Lebechi Hospital in Owerri, Nigeria, reportedly watched a YouTube tutorial while performing a Caesarean section, leading to the death of both the woman and her baby.
Onyekachi Eze said he had taken his wife, who was in labour, to the hospital, where doctors said she urgently need an emergency Caesarean section due to excessive bleeding.
However, he said he was horrified when the doctor and medical staff switched on their phones to watch a YouTube video during the operation.
“Right there, they were using their phones to watch a video on how to perform the Caesarean,” he said.
Authorities intervened, reports Pulse Nigeria, and arrested the owner of the hospital.
While some nurses have been detained, the doctors responsible for the botched surgery have reportedly absconded, with police intensifying efforts to track them down.
The tragic incident has raised concerns over medical negligence and unregulated healthcare practices in the state.
