Two men, who had accompanied a patient to the casualty unit, attacked and stabbed a male nurse at Helen Joseph Hospital on Sunday and tried to rob him of his cellphone.
The Gauteng Health Department said the men, who had been “unruly” before the attempted robbery, had launched the attack in the hospital’s parking lot while the nurse was on his comfort break.
Earlier, they had forced staff to attend to their friend despite the department dealing with a number of ill patients, reports News24.
Health MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko condemned the attack, saying it had been captured on CCTV cameras and that the police should track down and bring the thugs to justice.
