After a speedy six-month – and R67m – restoration, Paarl Hospital’s Outpatient Department has officially reopened after a devastating fire had caused extensive damage to the facility in January this year, reports Cape Argus.
The blaze had forced the evacuation of nearly 800 patients, staff and visitors, and resulted in significant structural damage to the department, while smoke damage affected other parts of the hospital, extending as far as the third floor.
Despite the scale of the emergency, the hospital remained operational, with service disruptions primarily limited to outpatient care, and with affected departments being temporarily relocated.
Although the restoration project was expected to take up to a year, accelerated planning and close collaboration between hospital management, the Western Cape Department of Health & Wellness, infrastructure and clinical engineering teams, contractors, and healthcare workers allowed the project to be completed in half the anticipated time.
Western Cape Health MEC Mireille Wenger said the reopening showed what could be achieved when government departments, frontline workers and communities united during a crisis.
“From the fire and emergency services who responded that day, to the healthcare workers who safely evacuated patients and continued delivering care, everyone pulled together when it mattered most,” she added.
