South Africa has been recognised on the global stage for its malaria-elimination efforts, being among the first recipients of a Word Health Organisation (WHO) award to countries that have eliminated the disease.
Awards were also made to China and El Salvador, reports News24.
Health Department spokesperson Foster Mohale said the government was committed to eliminating the disease and “a solid investment case was developed and received through a conditional grant”.
“These resources were put to good use: the programmes were capacitated and given the necessary resources to implement malaria-elimination strategies.” The department worked with stakeholders, including research institutions and other government departments, to eradicate the preventable disease, he added.
